Science

Welcome to Science

All pupils are motivated to achieve the best possible grade or level in their tasks or examinations. Our data monitoring process gives us an update on Every Child and their progress. The hands on approach together with group work makes learning relevant and enjoyable for the mixed abilities pupils that we accommodate in 8 well equipped laboratories with the inter-active white boards.

The Curriculum

The Key Stage 3 (KS3) curriculum is taught in accordance with the National Strategy. Recent changes to the Scheme of Work (SOW) and the inclusion of new assessment formats have been complimented by the Inspectorate of Havering. Topics are taught for a 3 week period and then tested to assess the Teaching and Learning (TnL) of How Science Works (HSW).

Pupils in KS3 are expected to make 2 levels of progress by the end of KS3. This progress is monitored by the Inspectorate of Havering. We boast about our KS3 Level 5-7 being at 74% and our new target being set at 80%.

The 360 Degree Edexcel Key Stage 4 (KS4) curriculum comprises of 6, Year 10 Modular Examinations and 3 Internal Assessments (IAAs). In Year 11, the 3 Structured Examinations and 3 IAAs together with the Year 10 grade, make up the Double Award GCSE. The up to date schemes and inter active learning materials makes the TnL of Science real and relevant. The Chafford School now holds a record for a 100% rate in Science at KS4 with a 61% A-C grades.

For the first time Triple Science, which is separated into Biology, Chemistry and Physics, had been taught at The Chafford School. Our results were a 100% A-C grades.

Every Child Matters

All pupils are motivated to excel to the best of their ability. Our science lessons are differentiated and this is evident in our schemes of work (SOW). The gifted and talented (G&T) are challenged within the lessons and are also given extension tasks. Pupils with special requirements (SEN) that require more help or time are well supported by the teaching staff (TAs) and teachers to help them cope with the tasks that are set. Parental contact keeps the working relationship and the pupils on target. These targets are constantly reviewed and new ones are set.

Science Departmental Policy

We set realistic rules that must be followed by all pupils to ensure safety and effective teaching and learning (TnL) is taking place. Amongst these rules is respect for others. Our rewards policy effectively encourages challenges and sanctions for those who do not abide by the rules. Homework is effective as it is monitored. Defaulters are set time to catch up on the missed work.

Extra Curricular Activities

The Science department can boast of their successes in Focus and Skills Days that were held this year. Learning to apply their knowledge and group work was perfectly experienced by all the pupils. The efforts of these days are proudly displayed in the school corridor.

Emerging as winners out of all the Secondary Schools in the University Challenge and The Salters Challenge was the pinnacle of our efforts in Science.

Thanks to great team work in our outstanding department which comprises of Mr P Hawkins (Dept Line Manager and Assistant Head-Teacher), Mrs B Alexander, Mr G. Byles (Deputy Head-Teacher), Mrs L Bright ( Technician), Miss S. Patel, Miss K Clarke (2i/C), Miss K. Palfrey (Technician), Mr L. Sabanathan, Mrs O.Odeja, Mr K Kassie (HOD), Mrs J.
